The Physio Matters team headed out to the coast this week to attend the Headway Conference in New Brighton on the Wirral.
Headway is a brain injury association which supports people after brain injury, with Headway Wirral celebrating its 30th anniversary through its conference and theme ‘Shared Lives, Supported Decisions’.
Held at the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton, the conference saw a variety of expert speakers give an insight into their specialist area. A key speaker was Dr Ivan Pitman, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist from Redford Court, run by BIRT – the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust – who spoke about neuropsychology and decision making.
Other speakers included language and speech therapists, clinical psychologists, and a consultant neuropsychiatrist. There was also an exhibition by companies offering specialist services for people with brain injuries, including wheelchairs.
Attending from Physio Matters were Colin Green, Clinical Director; Katy Parrott; Team Co-ordinator; Anastasia Giljazova, Senior Neurological Physiotherapist; and Dr Jane Tonge, Business Development Lead.
Colin said: “We work closely with Headway with many of our clients who have experienced a brain injury. The conference was a valuable opportunity to hear from a range of experts on the topic of decision making.”
He added: “We learnt more about issues relating to people’s capacity to decide, and the extent to which an injured or damaged brain can influence the ability to make consistent and supported decisions, however simple or complex. This gives us more understanding of important areas such as cognitive domains, the influence of the limbic system, and understanding motivations behind decisions – all of which we can bring into our neuro-physiotherapy treatment.”
The conference concluded with a drinks reception hosted by case management company N-Able Services Ltd, who are celebrating 15 years in business.
