Congratulations to our Physio Assistant Jack Collins who has secured a place on the BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship at Sheffield Hallam University, supported by Physio Matters.
Jack has worked with Physio Matters for just over one year, having graduated from the University of Huddersfield with a BSc in Sports, Exercise & Nutrition. He brought his knowledge of exercise and fitness to our team to provide a different perspective on helping clients improve their quality of life.
But after working closely with our Clinical Team, Jack has caught the Physio bug and has decided to become a fully-qualified Physiotherapist.
What is involved in a Degree Apprenticeship?
A Degree Apprenticeship provides on-the-job training, combined with university-based learning, which enhances the skills of employees, and delivers high-level knowledge and expertise.
The BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship prepares people for a career as a qualified Physiotherapist. It includes a combination of work-based learning modules and specialist education, with graduates eligible to apply to register with the Health and Care Professions Council and join the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
The apprenticeship is delivered over 30 months, starting in January 2020. Jack will attend the University on a series of study weeks throughout the course, as well as five assessed practice placements. In between these, he will continue to work with Physio Matters as a Physiotherapy Assistant. Overall, Jack will spend 35% of his time working at Physio Matters, and 65% studying or working on placements.
Support from Physio Matters
Jack is only able to undertake the course thanks to support from his employer, Physio Matters. We will be contributing towards the course fees and importantly, continuing to employ Jack on his normal salary, even when he is away studying or on a placement. We will also help him find placements and provide a mentor throughout the course.
Investing in employees
“We are always keen to invest in our employees,” explained Colin Green, Clinical Director. “We were very proud to win Employer of the Year a few months ago in the Oldham Business Awards 2019, which was partly awarded due to our strong commitment to staff development, and so we are very excited to give Jack this opportunity to fulfil his ambitions. He has shown great potential since joining us, and I have no doubt he will make an excellent physiotherapist. I look forward to welcoming him to the Physio Matters Clinical Team as a fully-qualified member of staff in 2022!”
Inspired by rehabilitation work
Jack explained: “Since working at Physio Matters, I have been inspired by the great rehabilitation work that the Physiotherapists carry out with our clients. I enjoy the teamwork, problem solving and our hands-on approach, and realised that this was the type of career I wanted. The Degree Apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity for me to build on my knowledge and experience, as well as develop my skills and progress in a new area.”
I’d like to thank Physio Matters for making this possible, and Colin in particular for supporting me and agreeing to fund and employ me throughout the course. It shows great faith in me and I won’t let them down!
I’m really looking forward to starting the course and learning about all aspects of physiotherapy, especially neurological physiotherapy. I plan to specialise in this at Physio Matters when I graduate, and in particular work with younger brain injury clients and help them with their rehab through sport.”
Good luck Jack!
