At Christmas 2014, 22-year-old Dan was involved in a motorbike accident which left him in a coma for 6 weeks and in hospital for a further 8 weeks. Dan was left with an acquired brain injury, a collapsed lung and fractured right femur which led to several operations. He lost his job in a factory as he could not carry out his work anymore and could no longer take part in his hobbies as he struggled with balance and mobility. As a result, Dan became socially isolated due to his brain injury, and spent much of his time at home, sitting in an armchair.
Since working with Physio Matters, Dan has made great progress thanks to his enthusiasm and commitment to his rehab.Through our recommendation, he uses the Bioness L300 Functional Electrical Stimulation system to improve his walking, and the Alter-G antigravity treadmill to improve his gait and reduce limping. We also introduced him to adaptive snowsports with Disability Snow Sports UK (DSUK) at Chill Factore to improve his mobility, coordination and independence. Dan has made great progress here, so much so that since this video was made, he has travelled to Andorra on a week’s skiing holiday in the mountains with DSUK, and he is going skiing in Italy next year. Dan has also started volunteering work at Chill Factore.
