Physio Matters’ first Spotlight Webinar has successfully broadcast with over 60 professionals signing up to watch, with the video now available here.

The first Spotlight Webinar took place on 4 November 2020 and focused on “The Changing Face of Serious Injury Litigation due to COVID-19”. Hosted by Physio Matters Clinical Director, Colin Green, the key guest speaker was Richard Biggs, Serious Injury Senior Associate, Irwin Mitchell LLP who presented for over 30 minutes. Kirsty Agnew, Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist at Physio Matters then led a Q&A with Richard, also introducing questions from attendees.

Impact of changes due to COVID-19

Richard Biggs specialises in complex and high-value claims, particularly in brain injury, spinal and amputation cases. He addressed a number of key issues including the changes that had impacted on the Court and the legal system due to COVID-19 and the first lockdown restrictions. Many services had to move quickly online which led to some delays in court hearings, fewer face-to-face assessments, and the wholesale adaptation to remote working by many in the legal profession who work with seriously injured clients.

He discussed how recent changes due to COVID-19 have affected practitioners’ role within the litigation process, and what this might mean for case managers, therapists, medico-legal experts, solicitors and other professionals involved in serious injury cases. His advice included the need to evidence everything as far as possible, especially in terms of making the case for face-to-face therapy as opposed to virtual provision.

Learning and interacting as a professional community

Colin Green said: “We are very pleased at the success of the first webinar and the amazing number of brain injury professionals who signed up. We had some very positive feedback from them too. This demonstrates that people are still keen to learn and interact as a community and we need to find new ways of doing this while social distancing restrictions are in place. It is very encouraging that our professional colleagues have supported this new initiative and are keen to come together to share knowledge as we always have done.”

He added: “I’d also like to thank Richard Biggs for his support and excellent presentation which I know many people found very informative in their roles as brain injury professionals. He has set a high bar but I’m sure our next speakers will be just as good!”
