Supporting Life After Stroke

The Manchester Evening News have published an article looking at the quality of care for people following stroke ('City at bottom of league for looking after stroke victims' 21 Jan 2011, M.E.N.). The article is based on a major national review of stroke services and found that there are deficiencies in the services provided in this region.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC), who undertook the major review looked at the 'pathway' of care provided to people who experienced a stroke or a 'mini-stroke' (called a transient ischemic attack) and their carers.
The following criteria were examined for each region and are scored on a scale of 1 to 5 (1=worst and 5=best):
- Manging transfer home from hospital
- Providing Early Supported Discharge
- Providing access to a range of services
- Providing care and support for carers
- Helping people avoid having another stroke
- Meeting people's individual needs
- Staying healthy a year after stroke
- Helping people participate in community life
- Care and support after TIA (or mini stroke)
- Reviewing progress after people have left hospital
- Providing a range of information
- Helping people choose the services they want
- Providing end of life care
- Involving stroke survivors and carers
- Working across health and social services
