Want to get back behind the wheel?
The ability to drive is taken for granted by many people. However, following a disability it is sometimes assumed that the person will never drive again. This is not always the case.
Before you drive again, consider:
- You must inform the DVLA about the change in your health.
- Think about being formally assessed.
- Do not drive following any disability without consulting your GP or consultant.
You should take care before you start driving again as you will have gone through some changes. Areas affected could be limb movement, visual problems and reaction times.
Physio Matters always suggest being assessed by the therapists at Wrightington Mobility Centre. The assessment takes about 2 hours. It involves both physical and visual tests, and a discussion of any specialist controls that you may need. The assessment will also include driving a suitably adapted car. Following this assessment, you will get a report which details recommendations to help get you back to driving. These recommendations may include advice on driving instructors or adaptations.
The Wrightington Mobility Centre is located in the grounds of Wrightington Hospital. Contact them on 01257 256409 or click HERE for more details
