STROKE: Facts and Figures for England

  • Each year 110,000 people have a first stroke and 20,000 have mini-strokes (TIAs).
  • Approximately one third of stroke survivors are left with disabilities and rehabilitation needs.
  • Stroke is a long term condition, not a fixed pathology illness

"Physiotherapists have a critical role to play in supporting stroke survivors during their hospital stay and when they leave hospital", reports the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) in a new factsheet highlighting the benefits of physiotherapy.

However a 2010 Sentinel Audit(1) stated that:

  • Fewer than half (44%) of hospitals have access to Early Supported Discharge (ESD) teams.
  • 45% of stroke services do not have access to specialist community rehabilitation teams.
"Many stroke survivors report a very real sense of both personal and physical loss. Physiotherapists ... are ideally placed to support individuals in working towards re-enablement and recovery" according to the Stroke Association (2/3).
  • Are you struggling to manage after a stroke?
  • Do you feel that no-one is helping you with your recovery?
  • Are you frustrated by the lack of support provided after discharge from hospital?

If you have answered YES to any of these questions, why not call Physio Matters for a one-to-one phone consultation.
